Wenger has admitted that he would like to add to the squad, but won’t go overspend or go overboard as he feels that the Gunners already have a strong base.

Arsène Wenger said: “We need to add, of course, and we will do. But we have a strong base.

“We have enough quality to beat anyone in the world, even with our current squad.

“You have a Champions League Final and only one team has beaten both of them and that is Arsenal.

“We have a good team and the best away team in the Premier League. “The loss of the Carling Cup Final had a huge impact on the team and we did not handle it well.

“It is not catastrophic and do not think we can go to Coventry and find the player who saves Arsenal Football Club.

“I always try to get value for money. That is the job of a football manager” said Wenger.

Wenger has never re-signed a player during his 13 years in charge at Arsenal but Campbell is set for a surprise return for his former club. Campbell, who last played for Arsenal in the Champions League final in 2006, played the first half of the reserves’ 4-2 win over West Ham.

The 35 year-old has been training at the club’s Hertfordshire base since quitting Notts County last year and has thanked Wenger for giving him another chance. “Arsene Wenger has been an inspiration,” he said. “He has watched me closely after letting me train at Arsenal for nearly two months now.

The Belgian has missed the last three weeks of pre-season with a hamstring injury but completed forty-five minutes for his country in midweek and is set to line up alongside William Gallas at Goodison Park.

His rehabilitation is just as well given that Djourou, poised to start the season as Gallas’ partner, has been ruled out for a month with a knee complaint. In the absence of further signings following the sale of Kolo Toure, Djourou’s setback leaves just Mikael Silvestre as defensive cover during a period in which Arsenal also have to travel to Old Trafford, Celtic Park, and Eastlands.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has compared 17-year-old midfielder Jack Wilshere with Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney.

Both players has hit the headlines at an early stage of their careers and Wilshere has now even been linked with England’s squad for the 2010 World Cup.

“What is good in his case is he reminds me a bit of Rooney when he started, in his belief and his positive attitude to go forwards,” said Wenger.

“For the rest, he has still a lot to learn, relations with other players team-wise, but there are some great basics there.”

He added: “As a manager you do not want a guy to be a star before he has delivered, and maybe here that is more difficult than anywhere else.”
