Salary cap call from Gazidis

Posted by goonerlad on July 2nd, 2009

The Premier League needs to adopt a salary cap in a bid to achieve financial stability, according to Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

Manchester City’s spending since the close of last season has dominated the back pages as reports of astronomical fees and wages become commonplace.

With Chelsea and a cash-rich Manchester United also expected to open their chequebooks freely in the close-season, more heavy investment is anticipated from the top flight’s biggest spenders.

Arsenal remain determined to stay on an even keel financially and Gazidis has called for a greater responsibility from Premier League clubs.

Wenger releases eight Arsenal players

Posted by goonerlad on June 30th, 2009

Amaury Bischoff, signed a year ago by Arsene Wenger, has been released by Arsenal after failing to break into the first team at the Emirates Stadium.

The 22-year-old Portuguese Under-21 international arrived at Arsenal from Werder Bremen and found himself a regular in the club’s reserves, making just four substitute appearances for the first team.

Wenger has released a total of eight players with Rui Fonte, who spent a period on loan at Crystal Palace last season, also departing.

James Dunne, Paul Rodgers, Rene Steer, Vincent van den Berg and Anton Blackwood have also left, as has Abu Ogogo, who agreed to step down to League 2 to join Dagenham & Redbridge.

Arsenal have made just one signing so far this summer, with only Belgian international defender Thomas Vermaelen arriving from Ajax for £10 million.

Arsenal target Felipe Melo to consider future after Confederations Cup final

Posted by goonerlad on June 26th, 2009

Arsenal target Felipe Melo’s agent has sidestepped questions about the Brazil midfielder’s future.

Emiliano Froldi insists his player is happy at Fiorentina but stopped short of ruling a move to the Barclays Premier League.

The 25-year-old is wanted by Arsenal and Inter Milan, with Arsene Wenger’s team thought to be happy to pay £15million for the former Almeria player.
